Rekindle radio 2020

Experience a rollercoaster of emotions as you view visuals with music and messages that were submitted to Rekindle Radio; A project Created and Curated by Artist Celica Ledesma with contributions and submissions from participants.

Inspired by all the lost relationships, misunderstandings, fiery debates, and miscommunications that sparked all throughout 2020 there have been signs of collective introspection, "cutting off" sprees, and regrets. It is pretty difficult dealing with losing someone you care about due to discourse and it hurts a lot more when it's least expected. You may go days rethinking and overanalyzing what went wrong and what could have been done differently. We may have let our egos get the best of us or told ourselves that there was no point in trying to fix what was there or have further discussion of what was important to you or the other. The reason I created Rekindle Radio was to present a chance for you to tell that someone how you truly feel about them. Whether you felt like you never got your point across to them, wish to take things back, felt misunderstood, or simply just missed having them in your life. Rekindle Radio was the opportunity for people to speak to the ones they have lost. Feel free to skip through to see the participants’ submissions and thank you to all who participated!

Sundays 2019

Sundays was inspired by an Oil Painting created by Ledesma titled Sundays 2017. Both the Painting and the Video represent a Sunday ritual from Celica’s personal life which is the chosen day she typically washes, detangles, and prepares her hair for the week. This time-consuming practice is something many black and persons of color deal with in regards to hair care. For this video piece, Celica included participants who had similar hair textures to her own and documented what it is like for them to do their hair care routine.

International Womyn’s Day 2019

Performance Art by Celica Ledesma on International Womyn's Day 2019 in Austin, TX.

International Womyn's Day is a Video-Performance piece in response to Adrian Piper's Catalysis series from the 1970s, specifically Catalysis III "Wet Paint".

Adrian Piper is an African American woman whose work dealt with race, self-examination, conformity, gender, and identity construct; with works ranging from drawings to conceptual art.

In response to Adrian Piper's work, Celica took on her approach of merging art with life confronting the public. Keeping a theme of Double Consciousness, behaving, manipulation as the public projects their curiosity. The performance takes place in Austin, TX in order to bring uncomfortable tension and practice that People of Color or more so womyn of color act on in order to make non-people of color comfortable. There is an overwhelming amount of violent manipulation being acted out by the performers on to Celica. Two of them are womyn of color who represent the molding that occurs within our own black and brown communities in order to please a society that demonizes us and our culture.

POV: Date with the standards for men 2019

Created for an Expanded Media Comedy Project Ledesma Introduces Darius, FKA Lil D; the embodiment of what many people may come across for their first or most dates. Now it is no secret that today the dating world can be pretty brutal during this time of dating apps, social media, refusal to heal, poor boundaries, and situationships. Have you also been a victim of the “don’t catch feelings” scam? Many of us settle for the bar not even being able to pass the bare minimums while women are expected to meet very high standards. Growing up around television shows where women are considered humble and down to earth for not having high standards and men can disrespectfully get away with just about anything and still expect to get the girl of their dreams. You must cook, clean, be educated but not too smart, be independent but not offend men’s egos, be in shape, meet their “type”, be spontaneous while maintaining the “cool girl” attitude, be their manic pixie dream girl but remain their object on a pedestal. Then again it’s almost a lose-lose situation for women because even if you settle for Lil D it can still be your fault for ignoring his red flags.

Thankfully today persons who have came across this type of behavior have now raise their standards and seek finding happiness without having to mother and cater to men like Lil D.

Gen y-Z 2016

In 2016 Celica Ledesma examined and surveyed public opinion about the rising Generation y-z. At the time there was so much backlash and criticism about these young minds and little did people know that after 2016 Gen Y and Z would step in and start a revolution, invent new career paths, and share a common interest in self-development. The video includes harsh criticism as well as some hopeful comments while being contradicted by the visuals shown before you.

Fear 2016

Fear 2016 is an experimental project that focused on compiling all of Celica’s Fears into one minute.
